Private Residences III
A platonic perfection of order gently placed in spontaneous nature in Dongquian, China. Just right outside Ningbo in a 10-acre secluded site surrounded by the gardens and the lakefront, the arrival glass pavilion takes full advantage of relating to its natural surroundings, achieving a strong relationship between the house and nature.
The several story house consists of a forest of steel columns that support the roof and floor frameworks, and therefore are both structural and expressive. In between these columns are floor-to-ceiling windows around the entire house, opening up the rooms to the woods around it.
The windows are what provide the beauty of tying the residence with its tranquil surroundings. The idea of shading and privacy comes through the many trees that were already located on the private site.
Although the materials do not conceal their industrial origins, the precision of the composition and the level of finish is designed to convey a sense of carefully controlled luxury. Everything is done to make the building appear weightless. The white metal stanchions do not reach the line of the roof, hinting at the aesthetic order of a Greek temple, whose columns sit below the entablature.
